Health Team and Friends

Members of the Health team and friends begin the clean up of the area for our vegetable gardens. A hard working bunch!

Health Team

Issue One - Sandpit

Some sandpit toys were recieved from local business.
We are now asking families at the school to bring along any sandpit toys they may have but don't use anymore. Some have already been recieved and the school is very thankful to those families.

Issue Two - Rubbish

The Health team is encouraging the children to bring along snacks for healthy snack time and playtime, which are not wrapped to help cut down on the amount of rubbbish around school.

Issue Three - Vegetable Gardens

The health team has begun to clear the area whre the gardens are going to be installed. Mr O'Hare is going to clear away a vine which is growing on the fence.
A quote has been recieved and accepted for the building of and installation of the gardens from Alpine Products.
The boxes are being made at the present point in time and we hope to have them in place by the end of next week.
Next step is looking at soil, water and planting issues!
We are on our way!

Health Team 2011 Term 2

Hello everybody

Issue One - Sandpit toys
We have written to builders, plumbers and electicians to see if they have any off - cuts or odds and ends that we could use in our sandpit! Watch this space...

Issue Two - Rubbish in the school grounds.

We sent home a questionnaire to our school families asking their opinions about having a no wrap lunchbox day. The response we got was half and half about going ahead with this idea.

We discussed these repsonses in a Health team meeting and came up with lots of different ideas. After lots of discussion we decided if we could stop the children walking around with rubbish this might go a long way to solving the problem.

We decided to go with a 'no wrap' snack idea for healthy snack and playtime. We will put ideas in the newsletter and encourage children to choose things that have no wrapping so they aren't walking around with rubbish. Look out for the next newsletter for more information.

Issue Three - Vegetable gardens

At this stage Bailey, Brodie and Mr Jury have done some measuring for a box for each class. We will be sending out letters to get quotes for the making of these boxes.

Health Team 2011

The Health team had two meetings in Term One. At the first meeting we welcomed Brodie, Bailey and Breanna to the Health Team and we spent some time doing activities to get to know each other.

We also looked at the surveys teachers had completed with their classes with two focuses - what's cool at our school and what needs improved.

We made a list of the things the children feel needs improved and began to think about which ones we could do something about.

At the second meeting we looked at the possibility of making a vegetable garden at school. We went and looked at an area that we could put a vegetable garden and discussed what would need to be done to develop the area.

The other the team wants to focus on is the 'rubbish' issue. We now have a school worm farm which takes care of food scraps so is the food wrappings which seem to be the problem.

This year the team has decided that they will look at this issue by encouraging families to use recycable items to bring food to school in. We looked at a couple of websites with different food wrap ideas.

PALS

PALS 2011

Near the end of Term One PALS got under way.
The PALS were put into teams of 3 and then working with Mrs Soper they completed some planning of activities.

This year PALS will be taking activities on Monday for Kiwi and Tui classrooms,
Wednesday for Pukeko and Kakapo classrooms and on Friday for Kea and Weka classrooms.

After working through one session with Mrs Soper each PAL group took an activity by themselves.

Next term we will be working with Lee King to focus on adapting games and activities for different age ranges and abilities.

The PALS will continue to work with the children during the week - look out for some cool photos.
